Taming Her Mate by Kathy Lyons

This book was a pretty typical shifter romance, with a bit of instalove due to the shifter mate bond that the animals within recognize their other half and push the human side to accept the romance quicker than most. It also had the typical fighting between different shifter races; Bear and wolf, as well as a dominant struggle of wolf alphas. I was expecting all these things and thus wasn’t upset by the predictability as that’s really what you’re hoping for in a shifter romance. It’s part of a larger series but definitely can standalone, you don’t need to read the earlier books to understand what is going on. There may be some characters from the other books but again you don’t need to know them to read this story.

There was a little more action in that there was some illegal drug and poison plot lines thrown in so there were a lot of fights or plans of ‘how do we oust the one responsible?’ This action I found pretty entertaining throughout the book.

The reason I give this book 3/3.5 stars is that the character development wasn’t fully there. Again, I appreciate the instalove of shifter romances but then I appreciate when the characters still get to know each other in ways that the reader also gets to follow along.Taming Her Mate didn’t do this and instead we’re told about two or three times that they have long conversations into the night but we don’t actually get any of those conversations. I wish we had as then I would have enjoyed this book more.

Thanks to NetGalley for giving me an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: Detective Ryan Kennedy doesn't have time for distractions. As the only bear shifter on the police force, he's responsible for investigating the cause of the mysterious flu-like illness that's ravaging the citizens of Detroit. But when the beautiful daughter of a rival clan's alpha asks for his help, Ryan realizes that she may hold the key to stopping the virus.

Francesca Wolf knows who's poisoning the city, and she has a plan to take him down, but it will only work if Ryan follows her lead. Frankie's strong, passionate spirit makes her slow to ask for help, but time is running out and the sexy-as-sin cop won't submit to her demands. Instead, he's giving her orders and firing up her passions just when she needs to stay calm. They'll have to work together-as equals-to save the city, to keep each other alive, and to contain a hunger that might just burn the whole city to the ground.
